I'm fairly certain my daughter just climbed out of her crib, got a book, got back into her crib and is now sitting and reading it instead of taking a nap. The crib had no books in it when I put her down. I'm not sure where I stand on this. As an adult I'm all for reading in bed. As a mother who would prefer a rested child (but secretly pleased with my daughter's ingenuity) do I make an issue of it or be happy that she's having a quiet time or wait and see if she falls asleep anyhow?
No one tells you these things or what to do about them.
Beck, I'd encourage it, but I'd make it look like it was my idea so I could be more in control of having a rested little person. First I'd move her to a toddler bed and make a big deal about her growing up and moving to a big girl bed, then I'd tell her that as a big girl, she can read a book in bed, but only until the timer beeps. After a ten minute timer, we'd put the book away knowing we'd get to do it all over next time.
